A power of attorney is a legal document that allows you to dictate who you want to make decisions on your behalf. Although there are many purposes for power, it is particularly important for unmarried couples who live together, when a partner becomes incapacitated and unable to make decisions. In such situations, the law usually refers to the incapacitated person’s next of kin as the decision maker. With a power of attorney, unmarried couples can give their partners the power to make such decisions.
Proxies can be as general or specific as you choose. You can give your partner the power to make decisions on your behalf at any time or only when you become incapacitated. You can also dictate what types of decisions that you authorize your agent to do. A health care power of attorney (also known as a durable power for health care, medical power, health care proxies and the appointment of health care workers alternative) would allow your partner (or another agent) make decisions about your medical treatment and to dictate to whom you want to be able to get while receiving medical treatment.
By executing a power of Finance (also called for sustainable finance), you can dictate who you want to make decisions about your legal and financial. You can be very specific about the actions that you authorize your partner (or another agent) to make, including accounts from which he or she has access and the types of decisions he may make.
